EthSamba 2023 Our first attendance as a community - OpenDataforWeb3/Resources GitHub Wiki

EthSamba happened in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 31/03 till 02/04. The event had 3 days, first day was a bootcamp for new devs , second day only “talks”, third day was the end of the hackathon. I,[Stefi~(https://twitter.com/stefi_says), represented and gave a talk about the community, here is my impressions:

It was the first event organized by EthSamba, from what they explained and was clear by the event schedule, their were some focus points:

  • Onboard developers and enthusiastic to web3. First day was focused on bootcamp, they went from zero till creating token and protocols focusing in Solidity, these workshops were mainly sponsored by Chainlink

  • Create a space in Latin America to develop and connect. A lot of talks were from other countries' projects from Latin America and there was a strong presence of other Eth organizations from around the continent.

Main impressions about the event:

  • EthSamba is smaller then EthRio but talking with people that attended both, on their opinion EthSamba had greater content and organization and will probably be bigger then EthRio in little time.

  • On the talks day a whole morning was dedicated to public goods and regenerative projects.

  • There where a lot about DAOs bad/ great examples and tools

  • Little was said about crypto currencies and a lot about other aspects of web3 including nomad lifestyle and so on.

There was only one minor talk that focused on Data besides us, and that one didn’t mention nothing about data integrity, centralization and capture . Seems that what we are discussion on our community is not yet well spread

Our talk:

  • Link to our talk slides ( they are in portuguese, if you have any question chat with stefi)

  • The talk has an ‘educational part’ were the sybil attacks on the context of Gitcoin grants were explained and the centralization of data too. Trueblocks, PoKT and Gitcoin were mentioned as examples of solutions and tools.

  • After that there was a little about our history, assets and numbers. I mentioned our website where devs could find indications of decentralized tools and FAQ that explained better the sybil attacks and its effects on democracy and voting online. Then I moved forward with a call for our next hackathon, regen rangers and Sandbox .

  • There were about 30 people on the room, we were not placed on the main stage but in the second one, the one that was more technical . There were no questions on discussion right after the presentation but after people approached me given positive feedback related with the issue, they said they have never thought that using API could be “ re centralization” and that sybil attacks were related with identity and democracy.

  • There were few ‘data related people’ but I onboard one of them on our discord and gave our twitter for some others

  • We were feature on @BeInCrypto_BR Instagram :)

Opportunities for our community:

  • As said before, little has been said about the recentralization of data on centralized APIs , the developers were being incentivized to use centralized solutions as it was the default way of getting data from the chain. With that in mind there is a gap about the subject and opportunities to showcase the community on educational events partnering up with other DAOs, one that stud up related with that was @eth_kipu/ @eth_latam represented by @crypto_chica ( stefi has her contact) . They have a great community , very active and focused on education and building on Ethereum, there can be space for partnering up and have shared educational twitter space ( maybe?) and invite people to our hackathon and community

  • CELO was presenting there too. They are having big project on Brazil together with the government and plan to build an ‘ongoing’ hackathon. @mila_rioja the CELO representative told me they are looking for partners to split the work, from what I could understand they would appreciate a way of voting transparently on projects of these hackathons and in the future possibly they can use our tools related to project review.

  • In a chat, @Nader from Lens protocol told me that Lens is going to host their graph data on G Bigquery , that could be awesome for us as we can use this data for Network related algorithms as Lens get more popular ( would be great to have a gitcoin passport stamp related with that too)

  • Origami is a Brazilian company that helps to shape and design DAOs they help with governance and other infrastructure, they too could be partners bring us as a solution for sybil checks on voter in their client DAOs .
