The Up & Running with Open Data event for regional library staff was also comprised of two breakout sessions, each with two tracks (or session options). In the first breakout session, there is a beginner track and an intermediate track. The intermediate track is geared more toward those participants who have had some exposure to Open Data, but would like to go more in depth about how to use it. The second breakout session offers an opportunity to learn about how to do analysis with Open Data, or how to incorporate Open Data services in libraries. You can find Seattle Public Library's content brainstorming ideas in the Up & Running with Open Data Planning Document HERE.

The breakout session and track structure and descriptions are below:

Breakout Session 1: Starting Line (Concepts + Tools)

  • Open Data 101 (Beginner Track):
This session is meant to be an introduction to Open Data. It is geared toward those who have little to no exposure to the subject. This track is focused on data and Open Data both conceptually and practically, but isn’t intended as a hands-on experience working with Open Data.

  • Open Data Toolkit (Intermediate Track):
This session is a more in depth introduction to Open Data, highlighting Open Data tools. It is geared toward those who already have some exposure to the subject. While this session is also focused on practical uses of Open Data, it delves further into: What tools can I use with Open Data, and how might I acquire and apply them?

Breakout Session 2: Final Lap (Hands-on)

  • Open Data Services in Libraries:
This session serves as an introduction to the library’s role in Open Data. From What is Data Literacy? to How do I evaluate a dataset? This session will provide you with tools and tips for understanding how to help both yourself and patrons to navigate Open Data.

  • Running Analysis:
This session is for those who would like to take a deeper dive into analyzing an Open Dataset. It will provide you a blueprint for using data to find an answer to a specific question. In order to do this, you will focus on using a specific tool for analysis and visualization.
