History and Future of Omnicoin - Omnicoin-Project/Omnicoin GitHub Wiki
FUTURE
We want to develop a new desktop wallet program. This new software will be more secure and stable, and will fix issues such as the current wallet hanging on close. We currently plan these new features: a chatbox, wallet theme changer, ability to easily export/print private keys, ability to add notes to transactions (omnicha.in API?), ability to import and export the wallet.dat (and perhaps, the ability to dump private keys from a wallet.dat without importing), dynamic peer finding system, DNS, or something similar. We also need a URI scheme for Omnicoin, which a tipping system could be based on in the future.
We need a more reliable system for cross compilation of the wallet to all operating systems. Currently, the linux wallet must be built from source and only supports a few distros, and the mac wallet also has issues. We need to fix these issues and allow the linux wallet to support all distros.
We also plan to outreach to other MyBB forums for their support of "The Official coin for MyBB communities". The MyBB Plugin (see below), should allow expansion to other forums (other than HackForums - which we hope to see the plugin released on soon), but we also plan to expand to new exchanges (e.g. Cryptsy) where more serious exchangers would be exposed to the coin. Sites where voting is involved require a lot of community support so if we propose these coins to such sites, we will require some advertising (probably on HackForums in The Lounge or similar). Any exposure for Omnicoin will boost its popularity so more market cap sites, forums, etc. are beneficial.
We are currently developing a MyBB plugin to integrate omnicoin into forums. Currently, this plugin is able to add verified addresses to a profile and display balances, but we hope future developments will include a full tipping system, price ticker, the ability for full market integration and payment system, a news/announcement page and perhaps even a faucet. Perhaps the MyBB support could be linked to NewPoints in some way.
We are always planning other novelty/innovative features. Among these, we want to release an omnicoin dice game, a mixer/tumbler, and more faucets, etc. Also, tools, calculators and similar software development is always great. See also OmniTrust and Omnicoin Ticker. An interesting possibility would be to integrate Omnicoin with Minecraft using a server plugin of some sort. We would like to implement another very secure online wallet as an alternative to omnicha.in wallet using bitcore.io
We have plans for a lightweight wallet based on MultiBit, and another based on Electrum for Omnicoin. The android wallet needs to be updated to include paper wallet sweep, now that Omnicoin has a paper wallet generator. Other Innovations would include a chrome browser plugin based on the omnicha.in API.
We are continually working on updates to the official wiki and website, as well as writing tutorials and documentation for the coin. Ebooks and tutorials based on Omnicoin and related activities such as making money from Omnicoin are needed, to encourage more members to start using the coin.
Another area which could potentially be worked on, is a new miner which is easier to set up. Of course, we are also currently focusing on improving the code compilation system for Omnicoin itself, potentially including the use of Travis CI, and winsparkle.
We also have plans for more novelty games, gambling sites, faucets, mixers, etc.
HISTORY
-
12th December 2013, Omnicoin V1 was launched. This coin was replaced by V2 (see below), but the idea and basis of the coin was founded on this release. The original announcement thread can be found here: http://www.hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=3923174

5th April 2014, at 12:00:00 UTC, Omnicoin v2 was released. V2 was released due to bad planning of V1, and is a complete relaunch of Omnicoin (the old blockchain and coins are incompatible with V2). The V2 launch thread can be found here: http://www.hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=4068253

4th February 2015, We have made the change to DGW and at the same time have added static client support, enabled UPNP and QR codes, and updated the alert private keys. This fixes the KGW Timewarp Vulnerability and makes difficulty more stable to counteract burst miners.

10th February 2015, at 10:30 CET, AllCrypt (the dominant OMC exchange) notified the Omnicoin community that approximately 2.5 million OMC was taken from the AllCrypt system. 2 BTC worth was converted, and the rest was withdrawn into an OMC wallet. The attacker used an anonymous account on AllCrypt to complete these transactions, thus no specific information was logged about him/her. AllCrypt was running an old version of the Omnicoin client, and was monitoring an old version of the GitHub repository. We are under the impression that they did not upgrade to our latest version. This new version did not contain any security updates, but it also rules out the possibility of a bug in the DGW code (which was released in our newest version). After the deposit of the OMC into the allcrypt wallet, a 51% attack was used to invalidate the blocks, returning the OMC to the attacker while leaving the balance on allcrypt. The attacker then sold this OMC. This issue was resolved with a second 51% attack to repair the damage done by the attacker, and everything was returned to normal.
