Follower overview: Redcap - Omni-guides/Tuxborn GitHub Wiki
‼️ This follower is available only in the Tuxborn 1.2 beta build. So all info on this page is relevant only to players using that build. Content here will be subject to updates as testing on the beta continues. ‼️
Redcap is a Riekling, one of the species of small goblins most Skyrim players will be familiar with from Solstheim. He is a fully voiced character with a lot of customizable features.
Where and when to recruit him
You will find Redcap being held prisoner by Anise in the basement of her cabin! His mod even comes with a note on the counter of the Sleeping Giant Inn in Riverwood, addressed to Orgnar, and expressing concern over screams coming out of the basement of that cabin. Read that note if you'd like an RP excuse to go break into that cabin, and confront Anise.
Once you free Redcap, you can then recruit him as a new follower.
Due to his being located in Anise's cabin, Redcap is a viable option for getting a squad together for fighting Mirmulnir at the watchtower. You'll be going through Riverwood anyway once you come back from investigating Helgen, so you'll be in a position to find the note that gives you the RP hook to look for him. And once you come out of Bleak Falls Barrow, you'll be well placed to go by Anise's Cabin regardless.
How to summon him
Redcap comes with a spell you can use to summon him if you get separated from him, or if you need to bring him back to you after dismissing him for a while.
Best follower use
Being a Riekling, Redcap fights with the same kinds of spears used by the Rieklings on Solstheim. If he runs out of spears, you can give him firewood so he can make more. This means by definition that he's best used as a range fighter.
He can also use a bow and arrows if you equip him with those.
Level of commentary to you
Redcap in general has over 2,650 voiced lines, so expect him to be fairly talkative. Mind you, he is a Riekling. So his level of ability to communicate with you is somewhat on par with the Riekling chieftain at Thirsk Mead Hall on Solstheim.
Level of commentary about main quest, side quests, factions, and mods
Redcap is known to have commentary on the following quests:
- Main quest
- Thirsk Mead Hall on Solstheim, regardless of which side you play that out for
- Daedric quest A Night to Remember, which will give you a lead-in for his personal quest The Red God
- Daedric quest Ill Met By Moonlight, which includes a new ending based on your choices, and a lead-in to his personal quest Bloodmoon Rising)
- Anniversary Edition quest Blue in the Face (the one where you can acquire Gogh the goblin follower)
Level of commentary with other followers
Redcap is known to have banter with these followers in our load order:
- Inigo
- Remiel
- Xelzaz
- And three-way commentary if you're running both Remiel and Xelzaz in your squad
Some important notes
About the note in the Sleeping Giant Inn
- It is is marked "Steal", and Orgnar is generally right there at the counter. Depending on where you are in your playthrough, Delphine may also be in visual range. Other NPCs will be nearby as well. So unless you're well equipped to steal stuff in plain sight, it's not likely you'll be able to take the note without someone seeing you.
- Reading the note will not give you a quest marker. Unknown at this time whether stealing the note will trigger a quest, but, see previous point.
Why Redcap isn't blue
Players familiar with the Rieklings on Solstheim will recall that they are blue. Redcap is not. As per his creator, there is an in-game explanation for this, which you will learn as you play through his personal quests.
