Backup Your System: How to Use System Restore

I learnt something new from this article. As someone who prefers mac, learning what Windows is capable of has been interesting. In this article, it is a step by step direction on how to revert to a provious state of Windows. This is really useful to have especially when an update changes how applications are running or the performance of the computer as a whole. The only catch, is that any missing document, pictures etc will not be restore. However, not all is lost Windows has a tool to retrieve deleted content. I will say it seems to be a pain to have to recall which version on windows is running in order to follow the proper restore steps.

Steps:

  • Determine what version of windows is running. For the purposes of this session I am running windows 10;
  • Click on the start menu and search for "Create Restore Point"
  • If this is the first time or if needed, configure the storage space allotted for restoration
  • Create a restore point as needed. Side note: Windows does create restore points automatically within the bounds of the storage available. You can customize this automation by modifying the registry.
  • To restore, selected the desired restore point. Follow the prompts to initiate the process. The entire process can take 10+ mins to complete. Only non-personal files are restore. Personal files are not included as part of the restore process even though the restore point does capture all files including personal files.

Things I want to know more about

  • How to restore windows from the command prompt?
  • As a system admin in a enterprise level, this seems like a powerful took; however, what happens when a computer is unreachable?
