HOW TO Update ship metadata - OceanOPS/helpdesk GitHub Wiki

Management of ship metadata

When a ship is already registered in OceanOPS but its metadata is outdated or wrong, before proceeding with the update, the user has to identify if it is:

  • A simple ship metadata update (metadata addition/correction).
  • Or a ship recommission (its name, country or call sign, ... changed). In this case, the user will generate a historical record and register the current metadata of the ship.

The two procedures are slightly different and allow OceanOPS to have up-to-date ship metadata while keeping track of the historical attributes.

To access the ship metadata editor, users have to be connected.

Adding/correcting ship metadata

The metadata recorded on a ship is incorrect (or missing) and must be corrected (or added).

Example: The call sign registered for this ship is wrong, the user has to correct it (ABCD -> EFGH):

  • Click on the "Edit" button on the bottom right of the Inspect window. This is when the user specifies whether it is a recommission or not. Here, for a simple update => No image

  • Update the field as required (here, the call sign) and click on "Save":

Ship recommission

For any change of name, country, call sign, ... over ship lifetime, we recommend to create a historical record. The idea is to keep track of the different ship attributes in the OceanOPS database.

Example: This ship has been recommissioned, and changed its name, country and call sign. image

  • Click on the "Edit" button on the bottom right of the Inspect window. This is when the user specifies whether it is a recommission or not. Here, for a ship recommission => Yes image

  • Enter a recommission date (will be the "start date" of the new record and the "end date" of the previous one)

  • Enter the new ship metadata, click on "Save":

The ship metadata are up-to-date, and the historical record (with previous name, country and call sign) is registered in the system (see the "Info" and "History" tabs of the Inspect window): image image
