Where is our Data Stored?

Pit scouting data is stored in this google sheet.

Stands scouting data is stored in this google sheet.

How To Scout

How To Enter Pit Scouting Mode

In the main menu where you select the position of the robot you are scouting, there is a camera button. Tapping the camera button will activate pit scouting mode. You can then hit "Launch Pit Scouter" to enter the scouting menus.

Help! I found a bug!

  1. Restart the device
  2. If that didn't fix it, contact a member of the scouting team. They will then:
    1. Diagnose the problem: It may be miscommunication rather than a bug
    2. If the bug is not critical, the problem may be fixed after the competition
    3. If the bug is critical and halts scouting, the member of the scouting team can send the problem to a higher up (Scouting Captain) to solve.

How do I know what team I should be scouting?

You will find your scouting position on the back of your tablet, on a long piece of tape. Select this position on the hexagon in the app.

If possible, it would be great to use personal devices for scouting, as we don't have backup devices. Meet the scouting captain to discuss uploading the app to your Android device.

When do we scout?

You will be assigned pit scouting or stands scouting in the Pit Schedule. Contact the Scouting Captain or Pit Scouting Captain for the rotations.

What Is Scouting?

Scouting is the act of collecting data on robots and their teams during both competition and build season. We collect a description of their robot, and the team's performance with their robot.

Why Scout?

Scouting is necessary for alliance selection. When our team is in the top 8 at a competition, we can use the scouting data (data we have collected on our competition) to decide which teams we want to work with.

Pit Scouting

Pit scouting is data collection in the robotics pits (Where robots are worked on and repaired). We can take pictures of their robot, ask questions, and ask them to describe their robot and their strengths. Descriptions and pictures allow us to easily recognize a robot.

Stands Scouting

Stands scouting is data collection in the stands, where we watch the game. Every game, 6 scouters watch 1 robot each on the field (Each scouter is assigned a starting location. The robot that is placed in this location will be the robot they scout). They will record not how many points the robot got, but where the points are coming from, and when (Autonomous vs Teleop vs Endgame).

Online Scouters

ORF does not have a dedicated online scouting team yet.

Why don't we pick robots by winning record?

From Is Scouting Beneficial? on chiefdelphi.com:

"Picking by winning record does not give you the best team, it only means you picked a robot that was on winning teams. Scouting is the only way to know where the good robots are. Great robots can be on loosing teams, just as bad robots can be on winning teams."

Why Our Own App?

Having our own scouting app allows us to be more independent. As Unity is not a common method of app building in the FRC community, we are pioneering a new way of scouting. By pioneering new ideas, we can further contribute to the FRC scouting community.

ORF believes that it is important for programmers to be able to experience many programming languages. Our app is developed using Unity C#, so it is the perfect opportunity for our members to experience another programming language.
