Data innovation - ONSdigital/DRAFT_DE_learning_roadmap GitHub Wiki

Awareness: show an awareness of opportunities for innovation with new tools and uses of data

Working: understand the impact on the organisation of emerging trends in data tools, analysis techniques and data usage

Practitioner: identify areas of innovation in data tools and techniques, and recognise appropriate timing for adoption

Expert: investigate emerging trends in data-related approaches, perform horizon-scanning for the organisation and introduce innovative ways of working

General resources

Data Ethics

If you are going to innovate using data or use data in innovative ways, its important to always consider the ethical implications. There are two Awareness level modules on the learning hub:

Learning Hub: Awareness Course in Data Ethics - Module 1

Learning Hub: Awareness Course in Data Ethics - Module 2

You can find a much more in depth and comprehensive set of learning resources on the ONS Data Ethics Wiki produced by our very own DALI Data Ethics Team.

Community and podcasts

Engaging with the wider data community can prove a useful when it comes to discovering and adopting new tools and technologies.

The Data Skeptic Podcast has hosts from various backgrounds - topic may be more or less relevant each week.

PyData meetups can be a good way to find out how others are using data in your local area. The four most relevant are Southampton, Cardiff, Manchester and London.

Expert

Strategy and leadership

The book Good Strategy, Bad Strategy by Richard Rumelt defines and gives examples of the titles namesake. Here is a good 10 minute summary of the book.

The four stages of data maturity could help leaders to understand how to help their teams and the organisation as a whole become more data driven. Here is a blog post that outlines the stages of maturity and (at a high level) how to achieve them.

Horizon scanning

Towards Data Science publishes on may topics relevant to data engineers as well as data scientists.

A possibly useful resource for horizon scanning is McKinsey - The state of AI

If you are really keen on working at the cutting edge of research you could set up custom alerts on arxiv.org.
