Recently some researches about bio-battery, which can generate electricity from energy produced by biological activities, have been developed. We are going to propose the idea about the mechanism which can produce (electric) energy inside the body. The battery works by the electric potential difference. So our first aim is to produce the electric potential difference.
In oil phase, two water drops are put and joined with each other. α-hemolysin, calcium ions (cation) and anionic fluorescent beads are put inside one of the two droplet ,while calcium indicator inside the other (no ions). Both the two kinds of ion (cation, anion) tried to move the other side through the hole made byα-hemolysin in the junction of the two spherhes , according to the gradient of ion concentration. However, by the difference of the size of the ions against the holes, the smaller ones (=cation: Ca2+) can only pass through the hole selectively. Then the electric potential difference can be produced.
By connecting nano electrode such as Mg line with the complex, Mg ions melt into one droplet which is negatively charged for the the height of the ionization tendency to make up a shortage of the cation. In the other droplet, hydrogen ions receive the electrons, and hydrogen occurs. In this process, electrons flow according to the electric potential difference. This is the structure of nano-bio-battery. By put all this (w/o emulsion) system into water (=w/o/w emulsion), stabilized complexes can be obtained.
In the future, Nano-Bio-Battery will be implanted into human body, and produce electricity safely and stably. So, that is expected to be put to practical use in medical field.
