Discussion about the use case. How does it relate to Spec Issue #555
National Libraries of Norway: Filesystem not well suited for storing many small files. Would like versions to be zipped to get around this problem. Would like to use split-zips. Would like to be able to see into packed layout.
Standford had similar problem with Moab. They solved it by moving the zipping outside of Moab, and deposited the zips into Moab. When making backups of the Moab content they create zips of versions.
If you're depositing zips, do you expose the contents in OCFL or is that part of the content. Julian is in favor of that being a sidecar in the object content; not a concern of OCFL.
Do Fedora users have any interest in zips? Not really that we're aware of.
