All-Nighter Expressway Design Document

Overview

  • Track Name: All-Nighter Expressway

  • Difficulty: Hard
  • This track takes place in a dream, hence the strange atmosphere and unique design, and has no guardrails to help navigate the course.

Design Process

Initial Plan

  • Create a track based on a student studying all night for final exams and projects.
    • There would have been floating math equations and an assignment submission box just before the finish line.
  • The track is roughly inspired by Rainbow Road from the Mario Kart franchise.

Major Design Changes

  • The theming was changed to a dream sequence out of concern that RIT would not appreciate the insinuation that its students lose sleep to complete coursework.
  • The general layout of the track has stayed consistent, but scale and turn angles have been modified over time.

Other Important Information

  • There are no guardrails to create a sense of challenge.
  • Stars are used as walls to block unintended shortcuts that players could take by using boost items.
  • The animation of the tunnels was made with a shader graph. Modifications will likely need to be made there.

  • N/A

Stretch Goals from Summer 2025

  • Add a section where karts need to dodge rolling energy drink cans
    • There are models already in the Unity Project, but no programming has been completed yet.
  • Include a large jump that racers had to cross. Would likely require some kind of scripted event to ensure racers landed properly.

Problem Areas

  • Double check any areas where players can take shortcuts with boost items.
    • If players miss more than 10 checkpoints before reaching the next one, the game will not allow them to complete the current lap.
