Theme

The general vibe and theme of Gizmo Go-Karts is that of the IGM student experience. Where would RIT be if it was given an IGM twist, and magically transformed into a kart-racing world? All questions of design should somehow relate to and ask ourselves of, does this thing (mechanic, narrative, aesthetic, technology, etc etc) somehow capture the whimsical IGM essence of the experience of being an RIT student?

Genre

  1. (Primary) Casual Arcady Kart Racer
    • Here, we are trying to be specific about where we fall in the subcategories of the genre.
    • Casual - here we are trying to pick up on the laid back crowd, I can pick up this game here and there, I don’t need to play it every day, probably fun and social, instead of hardcore.
    • Arcady - here we are trying to pick up on short-form commitment. I have 15 minutes to play crowd. Short core loops of gameplay.
    • Kart Racer - opposite end of the spectrum of “sim racer” lets go for “imagine what it feels like to have fun driving cars, rather than actually driving cars” - similar to how “guitar hero and rock band give a casual arcady “idea” of what it is like to be a rock star… not what it actually like. It is the “fantasy” of being a race car driver”. A child’s imagination of being a race car driver.
  2. (Secondary) - While not particularly our focus, in press releases or focusing on a convention/trade show. We can present this as a “X” game, for example, “Racing Game”, but we are more targeted specifically for the Primary Genre listed above.
    • Casual
    • Arcade
    • Racing
  3. (Joke) - Mario-Kart-like
    • Everyone here who has taken Game Design 1 with Nick knows how much he dislikes the “SpecificGame-like” genre title. But since we are “copying” Mario Kart as a learning experience, Nick will make an exception not to get frustrated with this genre term in this case. 😛

Setting

  • A fictional kart world inspired by RIT, Golisano College, and IGM.
  • Tracks will have “imaginated” versions based on iconic RIT and IGM student locations.
    • For example, “The Quarter Mile” can become an inspiration for a location for a cool race track. As students walk up and down it every day.
    • Another example, a famous “Mario Kart” track is “Rainbow Road” Gizmo Go-Karts version of Rainbow Road could be called “Mobius Brick Strip” etc etc.

Game Objective

  • Primary: Be the player/kart in first place at the end of each race.
  • Secondary: Have fun racing with friends.

Special and Unique

Our game is able to put a special and unique twist on the kart racer genre by implementing upgradable items, and also having twist boost drifting mechanics, which make our game feel a bit more distinguised from the leading competitior in our genre, Mario Kart. Beyond this, our game is made special by our R.I.T. theming, enabling us to prosper within our designated target audience.

Deliverable Goals

Throughout this project, we hope to accomplish these goals. This is basically our mission statement. What you work on each day should always push us closer to our goals.

Game Goals

  • make a kart racer
  • finish a race
  • luck and skill (opportunities for this in the design of game)
  • Casual Arcady Kart Racer
  • decent numbers of content (race tracks, characters, modes)
  • fun to play (what is fun?)
  • proof of concept for this type of ecoop
  • multiplayer (online)
  • interconnected experience (multiplayer, website, stats, data tracking)
  • physical installation RIT themeing
  • good milemarker/ 1st stone on the "legacy series"
  • establish the brand (what are establishing? how can we measure?)
  • ensure the game is well recieved for target audience

Team Goals

  • have fun
  • make friends and build connections and professional network
  • coop credit
  • portfolio piece
  • further increase skills (technical and soft and practice utilization of industry expected tools)
  • scalability of anything we make / do
  • respect towards the sub teams and their areas of ownership
  • commitment to process/production/ organisational structure/ etc etc

Sub Team Goals

  • fill in later (gets linked to app a)

Personal Goals

Individual personal goals for each member can be found in their personal bios in Appendix A.

Target Audience

Primary

IGM students hanging out in the 2nd floor lobby outside of the 2000 main IGM lab.

Secondary

Students, faculty, and staff who have relations and are associated with IGM, Golisano College, and RIT. (In that order).

Executive Summary

Our project is an arcade-style Kart Racer game that IGME students will be able to play in between their classes. This game will be iconic; that is to say students will be able to identify with the sort of vibe our game gives off. It will be reminiscent of R.I.T. themes, but will put a unique gamified twist on them to really capture the chaos and excitement of a Kart Racing game. This project, if successful, will lay the groundwork for future co-ops to be done in this same style.
