the New Media Group - NicheInterests/mistfunk GitHub Wiki

The New Media Group was an umbrella organization cooked up to allow area code 604's lively ecosystem of purveyors of tracker music to pool their resources without being required to sacrifice their autonomy and independence (right around the time that most of these concerns were winding up and their releases finding their way into Mist packs anyway. This approach allowed them to be co-opted with some dignity.) They consisted of:

  • Digitallusions, a one-person label representing Admiral Skuttlebutt tracking away on the [Atari ST];
  • Mistigris, a lively computer art collective that didn't specialise in music but still wound up sharing a lot of it;
  • Digitronic aka Trideja, an Atari ST-loving group of friends who enjoyed making tracker music, and one of whom, Simon, enjoyed making incredible quantities of tracker music;
  • [EuphoniX], the [Amiga]-based rave crew;
  • [Radiance], a poorly-understood tracker crew coordinated by Zinc out of [The Pelvis of Elvis] BBS while the HFR crew were busy transforming into SPiCE;
  • [the Immortal Syndicate], a demo crew whose liveliest composer was The Pope, who had already built bridges with Mistigris;
  • and Sonic Equinox, a tracker music social club.

([Happy Fetus Records] were an obvious omission, and I can't explain their lack of involvement during this period other than to guess that they were on a downswing when we were putting this all together.)

The major achievement of the New Media Group was cooking up the 604 Music Disk to present at the [NAiD '96] demoparty. Secondarily (these actually started first, but they were more limited in their footprint), it also hosted and presented [Tracker Fix] live get-togethers where 604-area music trackers and the tracker-curious could pop by and compose time-limited compositions from a compo sample pack. (Tracker Fixes eventually went virtual.)
