textmod.es - NicheInterests/mistfunk GitHub Wiki
Picking up from its creator mAZE's earlier [bbs.ninja] site, textmod.es was a gallery of sorts allowing people to view the contents of hosted archives (such as artpacks or music disks) from within their web browser. It provided a very similar service to artpacks.org and [Sixteen Colors], operating in the same space, but offering a wider scope, explicitly aiming to support a wider range of file formats (and eg. play [tracker music]!) The plural "[textmode]s" implied in its name pointed toward this openness to more than just the traditional ANSI file formats. As the less ANSI-centric option, it was a natural fellow traveller to the frequently ANSI-poor Mistigris in our wild and woolly boundary-pushing revival days: no one at textmod.es ever suggested that our releases did not belong, but rather they invited us to bring it on. Unfortunately, upkeep and maintenance of the site was not sustainable for mAZE, and it was succeeded by 16c (well, its URL redirects there now) when it closed after three years in 2018.
A document of its social media activities remains at https://x.com/textmodes , frozen in amber.
