posting computer art to social media - NicheInterests/mistfunk GitHub Wiki
grymmjack — Today at 1:46 PM @Cthulu what is the protocol for posting ansi works in instagram? i'm clueless about that. also is it ok to release my own arts on instagram before a pack? or is that bad etiquette?
Cthulu — Today at 3:08 PM First: export it as a bitmap (non lossy PNG preferred over lossy JPG), Moebius will do that natively (Ctrl+Shift+e). (Or you can use Ansilove, or just take a screenshot) IG traditionally wanted posts to be in an approximate square ratio (but 2026 privileges vertical 4:5 images), so in a pixel editor I would letterbox in black margins to make the shortest dimension the same as the biggest Then posting is straightforward on your smartphone, you can even set it up to syndicate automatically to Threads and Facebook Don't forget to include alt text for accessibility (and pertinent hashtags to help with your post's discoverability)!
(* Another 2026 Instagram consideration: EU users can laboriously opt out of having their Insta posts used for AI training, but the rest of us can't, so ... anything that gets put up there may wind up training genAI output.)
Artpacks like to debut works but with the delays between artpack releases I don't know if that's a reasonable expectation A way around it is to to showcase sections of larger works or in-progress screens - truly the best of both worlds! If you're going to post to socials: Instagram is traditional, Cara is a recent alternative to it that seems to have stalled, Twitter is traditional but nasty, BlueSky is outcompeting Mastodon as an alternate outlet, Tumblr is somehow still a thang (but you can get the most out of it by also providing relevant tags to the posted material). (And then there is still Facebook if you have to.)
If you go to the work of writing a description once it's trivial to just paste it and reattach the image to other services Less so if you also include alt text Consolejockey helpfully made a (desktop) Mistigram tool we use for socials, that will syndicate a master post to Twitter, Tumblr, Mastodon and BlueSky all in one go.
One final note when posting to socials re: video content -- at this moment in time, not all services allow video at all (for some of them you can get around that by converting to animated gif), and not all that do allow long video. (And not all allow short-loop micro-video either, you may need to run a brief loop for ten seconds before IG will accept it.) All that I have seen prefer mp4 to mov format.
(Speaking of animated GIFs, currently in 2026 while you can't opt out of allowing your posted images on Twitter being used to train AIs, if you convert the images to animated GIFs, even simple ones just cycling between two identical frames, it currently cannot train on those.)
Sharing audio to social media... that's a whole other can of worms!
