Using proprietary mIRC colour markup codes on ASCII art made using exclusively low-ASCII text characters in a standard fixed-width font allows [IRC] users to post an approximation of ANSI art on the IRC and have it be mutually intelligible (... at least, to other MIRC users.) There is a community of text artists working in this medium active on the [EFNet], who even compile and release [artpack]s. It isn't ANSI, but it's very close, and their persistence on the rough-and-tumble anarchic IRC long after the [artscene] drifted away from there as an organizing hub makes them akin to remote relatives with a distant shared history.
