Venerable (1991, as "newban") command-line [*nix] program used to generate ASCII art banners, taking input phrases and outputting the same phrases writ large in ASCII art [font]s. While this has just been another wacky tool in the sysadmin's toolbelt for decades and is viewed by old hackers as part of getting business done when the business is text-art typography, underground computer artists will turn up their noses at a figlet logo (same for use of a stock TDF font... word's out on how insulting they find use of [cowsay]) as evidence that the user had inadequate elite social connections to persuade or compel an actual artist to create real bespoke art for their use. There's nothing inherently wrong with the tool or its use, but depending on the context in which it is deployed it can be taken for boilerplate lorem ipsum by folks who care about textmode typography. (All fifty of us!)
