SysOp - NicheInterests/mistfunk GitHub Wiki
Abbreviated version of _Sys_tem _Op_erator (and consequently pronounced SIS-op), used in reference to the main owner and maintainer of a BBS. Secondary helpers, often without physical access to the system, were designated Co-SysOps. In addition to being responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the BBS, both hardware and software, SysOps could be tormented by callers to their boards abusing the (P)age the SysOp function, summoning them to their computer to [break into chat] as though a little bell was ringing, demanding their attention. (The torments could go the other way also, and some BBS door games (eg. The Pit) would allow the SysOp to take control of computer opponents challenging user players.)
Very similar to a sysadmin, but this term is used pretty exclusively in a bulletin board system context... and the system that the operator was operating was more likely to be located in their bedroom than the one the administrator is administrating. Canny SysOps could glean what was taking part on their BBS just by listening to the sound and cadence of of hard disc accesses, and some who were really in the zone could even distinguish the telltale traces of usage patterns by specific callers.
