Noel Gamboa - NicheInterests/mistfunk GitHub Wiki

A key influential early practitioner of Public Domain ANSI art in the late '80s, Noel lived in San Jose and innovated a "black outline" style of illustration that set the template followed by the thousands of underground ANSI artists who would follow. His style, primarily used to celebrate musical, anime and Star Trek subjects, would be embraced by local observer RaDMaN of Aces of ANSI Art and then built on (in a couple of cases, literally) and extended to present the underground with the basic stylistic template for ACiD (and through there, the entire underground) to follow. A great many of us are in his debt.

Despite possibly releasing the world's first artpack with ATREK22.ZIP, most of his creations were simply posted to [echomail] ANSI art conferences on BBSes and never collected until well after the fact -- in 2019 Cthulu tracked him down for interview (well, I asked many questions and he answered none of them) and gathered all of his known artworks along with some tributes. One of his most widely-seen images, a monochrome portrait of Wolverine, was seen by so many because it was used without permission by a crazy hacker and embedded into the MS-DOS MadMan virus.
