Controversial but significant figure in the field of computer culture preservation. First surfacing publicly as Sketch The Cow, co-founding TinyTIM (a MUD) circa 1990, after a spell working at Psygnosis in 1995 he began seriously undertaking his personal campaign of saving digital history circa 1998, launching the textfiles.com repository and its BBS list. By 2001 this path had oriented him as a documentary filmmaker, releasing BBS: the Documentary in 2005 and [GET LAMP] in 2010. In 2007 he cofounded the Blockparty [demoparty], and in 2009 he established the Archive Team in an attempt to mirror Geocities before Yahoo! mulched it.
In 2011 his digital preservation hobby went pro and he took a job at the Internet Archive.
Trivia: he was the owner of one of the first "Internet-famous" cats, Sockington, and once goatse'd MySpace.
