Starting in 1996 and growing through 2001, Acheron was the primary group-agnostic underground [artscene] hub on the web, featuring news, reviews, interviews, tutorials, photo galleries, lively forums and comments and other fun posts. It was established and maintained by Darryl "dangermouse" Lyons and federated with related spin-off ventures at [hirez.org] (improbably ultimately ending up parked in the custody of [Impure]) and [lit.org] to cover developments in underground high resolution and literary arts, respectively, without having to engage them directly itself.
Acheron helped to provide the artscene a rallying point at a millennial moment when it felt very much like our BBS and [IRC] roots had all crumbled away beneath our feet. After it wrapped up the party moved to [DeviantArt] before moseying along to Facebook and then Discord. [16Colors] hosts an archived historical version of Acheron.
