437 ART
- n. ASCII art that also uses the block characters of [IBM codepage 437]. Used often in [README] files of [MS-DOS] apps.
"437 Art", although a technically accurate description of itself, has never been a term used by the artists who create such art. Historically, everything has been lumped in to one of two categories: ANSI art or ASCII art, and then broken down from there.
I gather that what this definition is reaching toward is ASCII art that doesn't just use [low ASCII] characters but also the [high ASCII] ones (or if you prefer, ANSI art that doesn't use any ANSI colour or control codes -- typically seen as [block ASCII]. But just to reiterate for emphasis: the term "437 art" is a lexicographer's fever dream: though potentially useful to delineate liminal territory on the edge between two bordering realms, it is not a term that anyone has ever used... and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
