Wii U - Nebroc351/SecondWind-Guide GitHub Wiki

Prerequisites:

  • A Wii U console
  • A physical or digital copy of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild v1.5.0 and it DLCs (required for most mods including Second Wind)
  • A device (ideally a computer) capable of reading/writing on an SD card running Windows, Linux or MacOS with at least 20GB of free space
  • An SD card with at least 20GB of free space

Optional - Modding your console:

First things first, if you want to play mods directly on hardware, you will need an hacked console. Note that modding your console will not restrict any of it usage, and will in fact open new ones with mods, fan-hosted servers for online games like Pretendo etc. If you want to play on emulator you can dump the game without an hacked console.
If your Wii U is already modded with Tiramisu feel free to head straight to the next section and continue with the guide.

We're aware that Aroma has been around for a while, but it implementation of Sdcafiine, the plugin to load mods on console, seems broken, with loading times up to 3.5x longer than on Tiramisu and random crashes, with no indication that the dev team is working on a fix, that's why as of today we still recommend Tiramisu.

To mod your console we recommend this guide but if you're more of a visual learner feel free to cross-reference it with a video (NOTE: do not follow a youtube guide blindly, in doubt prefer the guide linked earlier, and ALWAYS make a NAND backup).

Dumping the game:

In order to install Second Wind and eventually play on emulator you will have to dump your copy of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and transfer it to your PC (yes, even if you want to play mods directly on console). Note that the full dump is about 15GB, make sure to have at least 20GB free on both your SD card and PC. Dumping the game doesn't require any extra software/homebrew and you will be able to use this dump to play on emulator if you wish.
Again, if you already have dumped your game using the Dumpling method (if that doesn't ring any bell in your mind you might want to take a look at the following instructions, the game needs to be in a specific format) you can skip to the next section.

First, make sure to disable auto power off and similar power saving features in your console's settings, the dumping process will take about 1 to 2 hours. Also make sure to insert your game disc if necessary and to install the necessary updates and DLCs. When launching BotW it should say ver. 1.5.0 and DLC ver. 3.0 at the bottom right of the title screen.

Once this is done turn on your Wii U, head to the internet browser and type in this address (you might want to bookmark it for future usage): https://dumplingapp.com/
Click the Launch Dumpling button and wait a few seconds. If everything went right you should be on Dumpling's main menu. If it's not the case after a minute or two, power off your console by holding the power button and try again.

vlcsnap-2025-06-22-21h51m38s441

Now that you're here you want to select Dump a game disc or Dump digital games according to how you have the game and then BotW (or any other game you'd like to dump).
After a few seconds you will be asked if you want to dump the update and DLC files, press A to select YES.

vlcsnap-2025-06-22-21h54m32s115

Finally, you will be offered to change a few options, note that the default ones are what you want most of the time.
Make sure that the Dump Destination is set to SD - Unnamed / your sd card name and to do the initial scan for required empty space. You can get the save from the account you want, and I suggest to leave Merge Saves To Default Cemu User to Yes.
Once you're good with these settings use the D-pad to move the cursor to [Confirm] and press A. Now all you have to do is wait for a while for the dump to complete.

Once the dump is complete, press [OK] and exit Dumpling. You can now safely power off the console, take the SD card out and put it in your PC. You should now have a folder name Dumpling at the root of your SD card, containing 3 sub-folders: Games, Updates and DLCs. Make sure that they all contain a non-empty folder called Breath of the Wild. If this is the case, congratulations you have successfully dumped your game! You can now copy the Dumpling folder somewhere on your PC that you will remember (e.g C:/Games/WiiU).

Optional - Installing Cemu:

If you want to play on your PC, Cemu is the emulator you want. You should follow this guide that covers everything from downloading Cemu to optimizing the emulator and BotW. I highly suggest to NOT follow a Youtube tutorial because I couldn't find any that didn't have any error and wasn't outdated.
If you follow this guide you should avoid those common mistakes but I will still leave them here, just in case:

  • Make sure to NOT use Cemu 2.0, those builds were experimental and each had their unique bugs / issues. Use 1.26.2f or 2.1+ ;
  • In BotW's graphic packs under the Mods section make sure to ENABLE Extended Memory and DISABLE Draw Distance.

Setting up UKMM:

You may have heard about BCML, the previous mod manager for BotW, UKMM is it successor by the same dev team. It's faster, more powerful, easier to install, has better memory management, and is still receiving updates, so you want to use it in place of BCML.
First, download the latest version from Github, which is as of now 0.16.0. If you're on Windows select the .zip (portable) or .msi (installer) etc.
Once you've launched UKMM you will be met with the main window where you can manage and install mods, but first you need to head to the Settings tab to configure the tool.

image Tip: if you ever close a tab / element by accident simply click on Window > Reset in the top bar.

Once you're on the Settings page, if you've used BCML in the past you can click on Migrate from BCML and UKMM will do the work for you. If it's not the case or if it failed you have another automatic option left.
First, expand the Wii U Config category. Once this is done you should see an Import Cemu Settings button, if you've set up Cemu and the game works click it, navigate to the folder containing your Cemu.exe and press OK. Once again, UKMM will do the work for you.

Click here if you're on console or the above methods didn't work to manually configure UKMM

If the 2 options above didn't work or if you're on console then you will have to fill in your settings manually, but no worries, it's not that hard! Start by heading to the Wii U Config category again.
Once you're there the first step is to setup your game language. It is composed of 4 letters following this format: XXyy. XX represents your game region, it can either be EU for Europe, US for America or JP for Japan, and yy is the language you will play the game in, en stands for english, fr for french etc. Here are some examples for you:

  • If you are from Europe and play the game in English, you want to set the Game Language to EUen ;
  • If you have an American copy of the game and play in French set it to USfr.

Once this is done, you must fill in your paths to your Game Dump that you have made earlier. Make sure that the Dump Type is set to Unpacked (should be by default). The Base Folder should point to the content folder in your Base Game dump, the Update Folder to the content folder in your Update dump and the DLC Folder (Warning: this one is different) must point to the 0010 folder located inside of the content folder of your DLCs dump. You can navigate to the indicated folder using the Browse button, or type in the paths manually.
For example, if you have put the Dumpling folder from your SD card at C:/Games/WiiU the paths will be:

  • Base Folder: C:/Games/WiiU/Dumpling/Games/Breath of the Wild/content
  • Update Folder: C:/Games/WiiU/Dumpling/Updates/Breath of the Wild/content
  • DLC Folder: C:/Games/WiiU/Dumpling/DLCs/Breath of the Wild/content/0010

Next step: Deployment! For the Deploy Method set it to Copy if you play on console and Symlink (or Hard Links) if you play on Cemu. For the Deploy Layout select With Named Folder. You can leave Auto Deploy and Deploy rules.txt ON. Finally for the Output Folder it depends if you're on Cemu or console.
For Cemu:

  • On 1.26.2f: C:/Path/to/Cemu/graphicPacks, Path/to/Cemu referring the path to the folder containing your Cemu.exe, the graphicPacks folder will be next of the executable.
  • On 2.1+: C:/Users/YourUsername/AppData/Roaming/Cemu/graphicPacks, since Cemu 2.1 the emulator looks for mods in the AppData instead of next to the executable.

For console I recommend to set it to an easily accessible directory so that you can copy the generated modpack to your SD card easily, like C:/ModPack. UKMM will generate a folder named BreathOfTheWild_UKMM in there, that's what you will want to move to the SD card later.

Congratulations, your UKMM should be properly configured now! Make sure to hit the Save button at the bottom right of the Settings tab, you can go back to the Mods tab for the rest of the guide.

Installing Second Wind:

Download the latest release of Second Wind from our Github, make sure to get the .zip that says UKMM in the file name and do NOT extract it. To install it you can simply drag and drop the zip in UKMM's window, or click on File > Open mod... in the top bar and navigate to the zip.
After a few seconds, Second Wind will appear in the mod list. If you're planning to use other mods with Second Wind, make sure to keep it at the lowest priority (0), you can drag and drop mods in the mod list to reorder them.
Once you have installed all your mod(s), click the Apply button at the bottom right, and if you have disabled Auto-Deploy click the Deploy button too.

Launching the game with mods:

If you use Cemu, launch it, right-click on BotW > Edit Graphic Packs and make sure that under the Mods category you have a Graphic Packs named UKMM and that it is enabled. If it doesn't appear you have done something wrong, scroll up a bit and follow the guide again. If it appears congratulations, you can now launch the game and enjoy the mod!

For console users you will need extra software to actually load the mods in game, but no worries you're almost done!

To install them simply extract the 2 archives and move the wiiu folders to the root of the SD card (merge the folders if asked).

While the SD card is in the PC we're going to move the modpack we created with UKMM to the SD card. To do so, head to the root of the SD card and create a folder named sdcafiine (double i aren't a typo!), and inside of the sdcafiine folder a sub-folder that is the title ID of BotW for your region.
The title IDs are the following:

  • For European copies of the game: 00050000101C9500
  • For American copies of the game: 00050000101C9400
  • For Japanese copies of the game: 00050000101C9300

Now, copy the BreathOfTheWild_UKMM folder (you can find it at your Output Directory you have defined earlier in UKMM settings) inside of the folder you just created. You should now have a folder called aoc and another one named content at SD:/sdcafiine/Your_Botw_Title_ID/BreathOfTheWild_UKMM. Those folders should have a lot of subfolders that contain subfolders and files: this is the mod.

Click here to see the final layout of the mod on the SD card
 πŸ’Ύ SD:/
 β”œβ”€ πŸ“‚ sdcafiine/
 β”‚ β”œβ”€ πŸ“‚ 00050000101C9500 or 00050000101C9400 or 00050000101C9300/
 β”‚ β”‚ β”œβ”€ πŸ“‚ BreathOfTheWild_UKMM/
 β”‚ β”‚ β”‚ β”œβ”€ πŸ“‚ aoc/
 β”‚ β”‚ β”‚ β”‚ β”œβ”€ πŸ“œ ...
 β”‚ β”‚ β”‚ β”œβ”€ πŸ“‚ content/
 β”‚ β”‚ β”‚ β”‚ β”œβ”€ πŸ“œ ...

You can now eject your SD card and put it back in your console. Boot the console and head to the Homebrew Launcher, you should see a new homebrew called Wii U Plugin Loader, launch it.
// screenshot of the Wii U Plugin Loader in the Homebrew Launcher, I need someone with a Wii U and a capture card on that one

Once you have launched it, you should see a row named Sdcafiine, press A on the toggle next to it to enable it and make sure to press + to apply the changes. Note that you will have to re-enable sdcafiine everytime you turn off the console.
// screenshot of the Wii U Plugin Loader, same as above

Now you can launch BotW, if prompted select the BreathOfTheWild_UKMM mod. You will see a black screen and eventually lines of pixels changing colors, this is normal, just wait a few seconds and the game will launch, with mods :D

To confirm that the mod works simply look at the game logo, it should say Second Wind, and if you have enabled the Shrine Overhaul all shrines will have a unique brand-new layout. Have fun!
