The Human DNA and its RNAs

DNA consists of protein-coding regions and non-coding regions. Protein-coding regions cover 1% of the genetic material and their direct outcome is messenger RNA (green). By contrast, non-coding regions of DNA are more complex and can be divided in:

  • binding motifs for regulatory proteins (blue);
  • regions that give birth to non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) (purple);
  • transposable elements (not illustrated);
  • highly repetitive DNA - essential in gene regulation and chromosome maintenance (not illustrated);
  • pseudogenes (not illustrated).
