Active Directory is the Microsoft product that allows several services to run on Windows Server that allow the management of access and permissions to resources on a network.
The Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) is one of the many roles in Active Directory that enables administrators to delegate information regarding network resources. For example, one might use ADDS to order network devices (machines / computers) into a custom hierarchy of Users and Computers.
