Prototype 1 Design Journal: “The Maze”
For my first prototype I created a game titled “The Maze” where the player must try to find the exit point. Once the player reaches the end of the maze, he or she will receive a prize. So far within the maze, I created uncanny obstacles which I call “fireballs” to alarm the player to not enter certain areas.
If I am to choose this game for my final project, ideally I would like to add some effect and kill the player if he or she touches the fireballs while trying to escape the maze. I would also like to add some hidden gems throughout the maze that the player must find in order to leave the maze. If he or she does not find all 4 gems by the time he or she gets to the end of the maze, they are stuck inside until all the gems are found.
Keeping in mind that this is a prototype, many things are still not working as they should. For instance, when the player moves left or right, his size changes for some odd reason. Also I will make the walls bigger so that the player can not see what’s ahead, making his task more challenging. The overall aesthetic will be completely different and will definitely be more alive than it is right now.
Design questions?
- Is there a goal for this game?
- What are the results you want out of this project?
- Who is the target audience?
Questions for play testers:
- After playing the game, is the level of the game too easy or too hard?
- Is the duration of the game too short or too long?
- Was it an enjoyable game? If not, how can it be more enjoyable?
- Does the camera follow the player smoothly?
- Does the character move too fast/slow or does it move smoothly?
- Is there anything that frustrated you while going through the maze?
- Do you like the aesthetic? If not, explain why.
