Design journal: Playtesting 1 Report - Naomi-Ifergan/New-Unity-Project GitHub Wiki

Design Report:

After getting feedback from my playtesters including the live playtester, I realize the same issues came up many times. The main problem that was brought up was the fact that the camera angle showed a front view which challenges the player when trying to make its way through the maze. A solution to this would be to elevate the camera in order for players to be able to see a bit of what’s ahead of them without revealing the entire maze.

Another issue that was shown was the fact that the character’s size changes when going left or right as I already mentioned in my Wiki. Some of the playtesters thought this feature added a unique element to the game while others thought it was distracting. The walls in the maze were also mech allowing the character to go right through them without having to go through some sections in the maze. This problem will be fixed if I decide to go further with it.

Lastly, while my classmate playtested my maze live in class, he did something I would have never expected. He outsmarted the game and moved the character around the entire plane allowing him to avoid going through the maze to find the exit. I found it very clever and funny however I will definitely make the plane the same size as the maze so that in the future, players will have no choice but to go through the maze to play the game.

In regards to the design questions, I had a hard time understanding the difference between design and playtester questions. Therefore some of my questions don’t answer themselves while playing the game. As a reminder here are my design questions:

  • Is there a goal for this game?
  • What are the results you want out of this project?
  • Who is the target audience?

There was definitely a goal in this game which is to escape the maze. My playtesters mentioned that it was easy and doable in a short amount of time therefore it answered both my first and third question. The fact that it was easy and the duration of the game was very short, indicates that it was created for kids. The second question doesn’t really answer itself since it isn’t a design question. But if I were to answer it I would say that I expect the players to be able to go through the maze with little to no difficulty so far as I did not implement anything that would challenge the players yet. But I plan on doing so if I continue working on this project.
