Auto Linking is a pretty niche mechanic for Pedestals

Using what you learned from Linking, if you put one of the Linking Tools with a selected Pedestal in your offhand, you can place Pedestals and they will Automatically Link based on the Tool in your offhand, the tool also will not loose its selection, so you can continue to link Pedestals without stopping.

You can also Select Pedestals, or Un-Select Pedestals with the tool from your offhand!

This can be very handy for setting up large sorting systems, or when you are setting up automated collection from a large amount of other modded blocks.
