Armor Insulation - Momo-Softworks/Cold-Sweat GitHub Wiki

Armor can be insulated to reduce the effects of extreme temperatures on the player. There is a variety of insulation items that can be mixed to provide optimal protection against the player's environment.

Applying Insulation

Insulation items are applied at the sewing table. If the player wishes to remove insulation, shears can be placed in the insulation slot, removing one insulation item at a time starting from the most recently added item and working backwards.

Insulation is measured in bars, which represent 2 points of insulation. The amount of insulation an item provides is displayed in the item's tooltip. Most insulation items give one bar of insulation, though there are other items, such as fur armor or hoglin hide armor, that provide more.

Each armor piece (i.e. head, chest, legs, feet) has a specific number of slots available for insulation. By default:

Helmet has 4
Chest has 6
Legs have 5
Feet have 4

Because armor items have a fixed insulation capacity, insulation items that would exceed it cannot be applied. Additionally, if an insulation item is an armor piece (i.e. a leather chestplate), it may only be applied to an armor piece of the same type (another chestplate).

Finally, insulation items cannot be applied to other insulation items, even if the item is an armor piece (i.e. insulation cannot be applied to a leather chestplate, as it already has insulating properties).

Choosing Insulation Items

There are three general categories of insulation items:

  • Cold ( )
Slows the rate at which the player freezes in the cold. Represented by a blue bar.

  • Hot ( )
Slows the rate at which the player overheats in the heat. Represented by an orange bar.

  • Neutral ( )
Provides an equal, but less powerful, amount of both hot and cold insulation. Represented by a purple bar.

There is one more special kind of adaptive ( ) insulation, which slowly changes its properties to become either hot or cold depending on the player's environment. Adaptive insulation is slightly less effective than normal hot/cold insulation.

For a list of options for insulating armor, see List of Insulation Items.

Mixing Insulation Types

As previously explained, these types of insulation items can be mixed on the same piece of armor, allowing powerful customization of the benefits gained. For example, a player might mix hot and neutral insulation items to gain a large benefit against hot environments, while still having a decent benefit in cold environments. Or the player might choose to use exclusively hot insulation items, foregoing benefits in any other climate but maximizing heat resistance.
