Right click with the carrier on your tamed cats and dogs to capture them, making it incredibly easy to carry them with you! Right click again to release your pet on the block you're looking at.

While one of your pets is contained in a carrier, hovering over the item in your inventory will help differentiate between which pet is in which carrier thanks to useful tooltips.
