A "field term" is a tour of duty or period of assignment on location. This concept does not apply to every organization. Some, for example, might simply hire employees for a fixed or indefinite period, during which they will remain on location except during vacations or other travel. Members of others, such as many religious missions, alternate between periods of field duty and home assignment or furlough. The field term in this system is designed for such organizations. If it's useful for you, use it. If not, ignore it.
