Install IBM PC-DOS v4.01
To install IBM PC-DOS 4.01 on an IBM PS/1, you'll generally need to boot from a floppy disk, partition and format the hard drive, and then copy the DOS files. Specific instructions can vary slightly depending on the PS/1 model and the software you have available. However, a common method involves using the "CUSTOMIZ.EXE" program to configure the system to boot from the hard drive after the initial installation.
Here's a breakdown of the general process:
1. Boot from a DOS 4.01 floppy:
Ensure your PS/1 is set to boot from the floppy drive first. This is usually done through the System menu (accessed by holding both mouse buttons while powering on).
2. Partition and Format the Hard Drive:
Use the FDISK utility to create a partition and make it active. Then, use the FORMAT C: /S command to format the hard drive and transfer the system files.
3. Copy DOS Files:
Copy the contents of the DOS 4.01 floppy to the hard drive (usually to the C:\DOS directory).
4. Configure Boot Process:
Access the System menu again and navigate to the DOS folder. Run CUSTOMIZ.EXE.
5. Configure System Startup:
Within CUSTOMIZ.EXE, select "Try Diskette First, then Try Fixed Disk" to allow booting from either floppy or hard drive. Also, configure it to read CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT from the hard drive.
6. Reboot:
Restart the computer using Ctrl+Alt+Del. The system should now boot from the hard drive and load DOS.
7. Install other software (optional):
If you have other preloaded software (like Microsoft Works, Prodigy, etc.), you can use the provided installation guides or setup programs to install them on the hard drive.
Important Notes:
Model Specifics: Some PS/1 models may have slightly different procedures or require specific disk images or files. Consult the PS/1 Resource Page on Oldskool.org or your specific model's documentation for any model-specific instructions.
Backup:
It is a good idea to make a backup of the hard drive or any relevant files before starting the installation process. Advanced Diagnostics: If you have an IBM Advanced Diagnostics diskette, you can use it to troubleshoot any issues during the installation.
System Menu:
The System menu is accessed by pressing and holding both mouse buttons while powering on the PS/1. This menu allows you to configure various aspects of the system startup and hardware.
