Concatenation Methods in Verilog (Padding)

  1. Zero Padding on the Left (MSB Padding) — Not Recommended:
sound_10 = 10'b1010101010
sound_16 = {6'b000000, sound_10} = 16'b0000001010101010
  1. Zero Padding on the Right (LSB Padding) — Common Approach:
sound_10 = 10'b1010101010
sound_16 = {sound_10, 6'b000000} = 16'b1010101010000000
  1. Bit Replication (Mirroring the Lower Bits) — More Accurate but Complex:
sound_10 = 10'b1010101010
sound_16 = {sound_10, sound_10[5:0]} = 16'b1010101010101010
  1. Simple Scaling (Shift Left) — Good Approach:
sound_10 = 10'b1011001100
sound_16 = sound_10 << 6 = 16'b1011001100000000

Example

  reg signed [3:0] r_SIGNED   = 4'b1110;
  wire [7:0]       w_CAT_2;
  wire [15:0]      w_CAT_3;

  reg              r_CLOCK = 1'b0;
  reg [7:0]        r_SHIFT_REG = 8'h01;

  // Demonstrates a common concatenation.
  assign w_CAT = {r_VAL_1, r_VAL_2};

  // Demonstrates concatenation of different types
  assign w_CAT_2 = {r_SIGNED, r_UNSIGNED};

  // Demonstrates Verilog padding upper bits with 0.
