About the Board - Mango-kid/maciot GitHub Wiki

The MacIoT Board was designed in a partnership between McMaster University (Hamilton, Canada) and Roboteurs Inc. The intent of the boards design was to provide students a dynamic way of exploring the Internet of Things. With all of the rapid advances in IoT it has become very difficult to teach students the concepts because there are so many over arching concepts that are required for IoT development.

Instead of trying to squeeze IoT development into one course this board is given to students at an early stage where it can later be incorporated into different aspects of learning. Below are just a few of the ways this board can be used for experimentation outside of classroom norms.

  • Using the board to collect sensor data for analysis in Stats class
  • Exploring numerical methods and C++
  • Understanding of basic electronics and using with Introductory Electronics classes
  • Mechatronics course
  • Any projects the require some out of the box thinking and development.

Open Source Initiative

The MacIoT board is open source hardware. This means that all of the designs are publicly available for people to explore and modify as they wish. Besides making contributions to the OSH community we also hope that hope that other schools will take this board and modify it for there own purposes for the sake of education and research.

Manufacturability

To help expand students knowledge of IoT design beyond just putting wires and code together the MacIoT Board is also design to be manufactured on campus where students can be a part of the fabrication process. This gives them direct exposure to many different aspects of product life-cycle.
