The U36C's biggest purchaser was the FCP of Mexico, who bought 104. A large amount of these units survived to become Super 7 rebuilds. Photo courtesy Craig Garver
The U36C is an uprated U33C to replace the latter model. Having spent close to 13 years refining the FDL, GE introduced the final uprating of the Universal series, bringing their lineup to the 3000-3600 HP standard EMD had pioneered six years earlier. Despite this, the U36C had missed the mark for 3600 horsepower equipment, as the majority of roads had centered around 3000 horsepower road switcher power over 3600. Still, the U36C sold a decent 238, with 100 going to the ATSF and 104 going to FCP, both of whom got very long lives out of their U36's through rebuilds.
When the Universal series was superceded by the Dash 7 series, the U36C was replaced by the C36-7.
