In 1959, the Bryansk Machine-Building plant created a project for a better version of the TEM1 (which was just a RSD-1 export). For this locomotive, the Penza Diesel Plant created the PD1 engine, which was based on the 2D50 diesel engine. It also recieved some minor body modifications from the TEM1. Two locomotives would be produced in 1960, but it wasn't given its TEM2 designation until 1961. Later in 1968, a mondernization project was created for the TEM2, replacing the PD1 engine with the PD1M (which was based from the 2D50M engine), and making it so the locomotive can be adaptabed for both 1520mm and 1435mm gauges without changing bogies. Both names are interchanable as the difference between the engines (PD1 and PD1M) and the gauge adaption are negligible at best. The TEM2 was produced from 1960-1968, while the TEM2A was produced from 1968-1975. A total of 3,160 TEM2s and TEM2As were produced during this time period (2,160 from the BMZ and 1,000 from the Voroshilovgrad Plant). TEM2-580 was the first locomotive awarded the USSR State Quality Mark. Export variants that were produced were labeled as the TEM2E (general exports) and the PKP SM48 (Polish) (these desginations were used for all exported TEM2s, no matter their original designation).
