The T-6 was introduced to eventually replace the S-6 as Alco's 251 powered switcher. Reverting to side-mounted radiators and adding Alco's now-signature chops to the long hood, the T-6 had a very unique appearance among switchers of all builders. With the introduction of the T-6, Alco discontinued the long-running S-3 and S-4, becoming Alco's only offering for a switcher at the time; however, due to its late introduction and the market already being saturated, few units were sold. Built as more of a road unit than a switcher, many of its buyers used it in transfer service. Due to its versatility as a switcher and road unit, many units were bought by second owners and survive into the modern-day.
