The SW900 was an upgraded SW8. Released as part of the revised 567 line in late 1953, the SW900 (like the SW8 before it) filled a "middle ground" role in EMD's end-cab switcher roster, offering an engine that was lighter than the SW1200, but beefier than the SW600. 357 locomotives were built by EMD and GMD over a 16 lifespan; like most other EMD end cab switchers of the era, many saw long service lives and prosperous secondary careers. The SW900 was finally replaced in 1966 by the 645 line equivalent SW1000.
