Colorado and Southern/ATSF #159 sits in Denver, Colorado. This unit has a very long life ahead of it, being retired in 2007! Photo credit Craig Garver
The EMD SW1200 was the direct replacement to the SW9. Introduced in late 1953 as part of the revised 567 line, the SW1200 was one of the most successful EMD switchers of all time. Selling over 1000 units, the SW1200 represented the apex of 18 years of refined design; as with the rest of the 567 line, most units saw prosperous lives and long secondary careers. The SW1200 (along with the SW600 and SW900 ) was sold well after the end of normal 567 locomotive production ended so that the 645 switchers (the SW1000 and SW1500 ) could be fully tested; upon their release, the SW1200 was discontinued.
