The SD9043MAC is an SD90MAC which has the standard 4,300 horsepower EMD 710 engine (very similar to SD70MAC engines). They are very similar to their 6000 HP cousins, and are sometimes called "convertibles" for their planned (but never implemented) conversion to the 265H engine once teething problems were solved.

Most "SD90MAC" line locomotives were the SD9043MAC variant, and outlasted their true 90MAC cousins. Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific were buyers for eventual 265H conversion, along with a small batch from the CIT Financing group that would lease theirs to UP.
