The SD9 was a later variant of the SD7 with a modified 567 block to increase it by 250 horsepower. The SD9, like the SD7, features a non-turbocharged V-16 567 engine block, and Flexicoil C trucks.

These two units helped to shape the new Special Duty series to be a dependable backbone for main line freight power for decades to come; however, the SD9 was the much better seller of the two, and sold 515 units worldwide (including 44 to Korea, Chile, and Venezuela.) Much like the SD7s buyers, Southern Pacific (150) and Chicago, Burlington and Quincy (80) were again both the two major purchasers of the SD9 unit respectively.

Some SD9s, like Southern Pacific's, Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway's, and Chicago and Northwestern's, were fitted with steam generators for passenger/commuter service, and thus had a split fuel tank for water to supply the boiler.
