The SD60MAC was an experimental AC locomotive created by EMD by using the SD60 design. The SD60MACs were the first locomotives within EMD's offerings to use alternating current traction motors, and used the newly developed HTC Radial steering truck.

Only four examples were made of this locomotive; all were units made for the Burlington Northern railroad in June of 1991 (BN 9500 & 9501) and January of 1992 (9503 & 9504). The SD60MAC locomotives were primarily tested on Burlington Northern's coal trains from the Powder River Basin, where long and slow coal trains could benefit from less fast, but more powerful AC powered locomotives. Eventually, the SD60MACs would later give up their job to the SD70MAC locomotive types, a group that the 60MAC tests helped to develop.

After the successful test of the new AC traction setups, the SD60MACs were later considered too unique to justify further use, and Burlington Northern returned the locomotives to Electo-Motive Division.

The 9501 became a test bed for diesel engines to either wear them in before installations into EMD locomotives, or to try out experimental engine designs.

The other three locomotives (9500, 9502, & 9503) are currently being used at the Association of American Railroads (AAR) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) testing grounds out at Pueblo, Colorado for either locomotive power on test trains, or are otherwise in storage to an uncertain future.
