SD49

A modified ex Alaska Railroad GP49, now 6 axle Ferronor, is perhaps a sole look at what the SD49 could have been. Photo credit Allen Miller

The SD49 was an unproduced V12 version of the V16 SD50 offered in EMD's catalog at the time. This locomotive stands as a paper engine, as no customers wanted to purchase a high horsepower V12 equipped locomotive (as the country in the 1980s had well recovered from the 1970s fuel crisis that sparked the need for a 12 cylinder, 6-axle locomotives anyways), especially with the notorious problems of the 645F engine.

However, the information provided below can help those who want to have such a locomotive on their roster, especially those with other 12-645 engines like the GP49 and SD39-2 (which was also simply cataloged but never made).
