The SD45, introduced in 1965, was EMD's first 6-axle offering to use the turbocharged 20-645E3 prime mover. The SD45 sported 3600 horsepower and an AR10 Alternator instead of the DC generators found on earlier EMD models. The extra power developed by the massive V-20 prime mover gave the locomotive a large tractive effort boost compared to other EMD 6-motor models, driving the locomotive's popularity. While the electronics and trucks were upgraded in the SD45-2, the prime mover and main electrical gear remained unchanged. The SD45 sold over 1200 units, comparable to its V-16 cousin, the SD40. The passenger version, the SDP45, featured a steam generator at the rear end of the carbody.
