The SD40-2 was introduced by EMD in 1972 as part of the "dash 2" line, and was the replacement for the SD40. Featuring a modular electrical system and the new adhesion-boosting HTC truck, the SD40-2 built off of the SD40's strong points while improving upon it's shortcomings, such as it's average electrical reliability. 3,982 SD40-2s were built, making it one of most successful locomotives of all time.

Notes

(1): Conrail SD40-2s rode on Flexicoil C trucks. The Flexicoil C has 25% Adhesion.

(2): SD40-2s could optionally be equipped with the older "composite" EMD control stands that gave Automatic Transition with Selector.
