The SD35 was EMD’s redeveloped 6 axle locomotive offering that ran from June of 1964 to January of 1966, along with a non-turbocharged variant called the SD28. With the carbody styling of the SD24 harkening back to the founding SD7 and SD9 units, EMD redesigned the look of their locomotives beginning with the SD35. The SD35 was also the last Special Duty series to include the EMD 567D3A V16 diesel engine, capable of 2500 HP, before its eventual replacement with the 645 series in the SD38 and SD40. Despite a one-and-a-half-year stint on EMD’s catalogs, 360 units were built for ACL, B&O, CofG, C&O, L&N, N&W, PRR, SOU, SP, and WM.

The EMD SDP35 was EMD’s steam generator passenger variant of the locomotive, which began in the July of 1964 to September of 1965. 35 SDP35s were built between its one-year run, notably for SAL, ACL, L&N, and UP. SDP35s (and presumably those who willed it on their freight cousins) had gear ratios capable of 89 miles per hour maximum.

Fun fact: The L&N Railroad, which bought SDP35 units for replacements to EMD E units on passenger service, were not delivered with steam equipment, and were equipped with remote control equipment instead when passenger service was discontinued.
