The SD24 was the first turbocharged 6 axle road switcher offering from EMD, and ran alongside it's first turbocharged four axle cousin, the GP20. The SD24 was the last locomotive to use the former early Special Duty car body; because of this, one of its unique spotting features was a larger turbocharger blower that created a round protrusion on the conductors side.

While it featured more than a four-and-a-half year run as a locomotive offering, only 224 units (including 45 B units) were made for Santa Fe, Union Pacific, Southern Railway, Kennecott Copper, and Chicago Burlington & Quincy.

The SD24 also came in a cabless B unit, solely purchased by the Union Pacific railroad.

An SD24B, purchased by UP only, sits in new paint in Provo, Utah on January 1977; it would be a retired a year later. Photo credit James Belmont
