The S-5 was Alco's first switcher to use the new carbody design and the first real production unit to use the 251 engine, only being preceded by ten GE 78 tonners and a one-off S-5 prototype built as Alco's plant switcher. Being more of an experiment for the 251 and an , it didn't sell too well; only having a production of seven units before being replaced by the S-6 when the RS-11 and the rest of the initial 251 powered line up came into production. Surprisingly, even with its absurdly low production count, a single S-5 exists, albeit in just static display.
