The RS-11 is a 4 axle, V12 turbocharged locomotive that was a replacement for the tried and true Alco RS-3.

ALCo, working off the sucess of their RS-3, later developed a higher horsepower turbocharged engine to compete with the highly popular EMD GP9 engine; this engine, the Alco 251, resolved a lot of issues that came from the previous ALCo 244. While on paper this engine was a higher horsepower engine that accelerated faster that used less fuel than a GP9, ultimately railroads decided to continue purchasing EMD products on a much greater scale.

Additionally, a Canadian version (manufactured by ALCo subsidiary Montreal Locomotive Works) was offered, and was branded as the RS-18.

In total, production for the RS-11s ran from February 1956 to June 1961, with a grand total of 462 made by ALCo and occasional chip in from MLW. Noteable orders were 3 demonstrators from ALCo to show around on various different railroads (701, 701A, 701B), 2 RS-11s made off of RS-3 rebuilds with CNW that kept their RS-3 short hood, and an order of 75 units from Ferrocarilles Nacionales de Mexico (Mexican National Railways), as well as orders from Southern Peru Copper company.
