spooky scary prototypes!!!! One of the Rock Island's two proto-LS-800's, on the original frame with a reduced overall body size, serves Blue Island, Illinois in 1959. Image copyright Paul McGrane

The LS-800 (or A-3171) was a refinement of the LS-750's concept, featuring a shorter frame and a modest improvement in performance. Like the LS-750 before it, the LS-800 used a six-cylinder turbocharged engine driving Westinghouse electrical gear. Naturally, they excellently exhibited era-appropriate turbo lag.

The first two units of the class, sold to Rock Island, were visually identical to the LS-750/1000/1200 platform with minor cosmetic differences. The latter 21, all of which were sold to New York Central, were on a unique shorter frame. None survive.
